The Steps Towards Learning Guide, prepared by Save the Children UK, summarises and explains what is known worldwide about the difficulties that children experience with unfamiliar school language. It offers evidence, arguments and practical steps to help stop language preventing children from learning, with a focus on developing countries. The Guide is targeted to anyone involved in education where children do not use the language of school at home. It should be especially useful to local, district and provincial education officials, school principals, teachers and education project or programme staff working in non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
