Girls' Education, Empowerment, and the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation

To build back better following the COVID-19 pandemic and in accelerating action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, there is an opportunity to build back equal by strengthening the link between girls’ access to education and girls' risk of being subjected to FGM. Education plays a critical role in challenging discriminatory social and gender norms that drive the practice of FGM. Developed jointly by UNICEF and UNGEI, this technical note demonstrates and deepens linkages between girls' education and FGM, and shares promising strategies to end FGM through education, accelerating progress towards SDG4 and SDG5.
