Who we are

The East Asia Pacific Regional UN Girls’ Education Initiative (EAP UNGEI) is a network of experts and organizations promoting the right to education and gender equality for all. In the support of the SDG Agenda 2030, the EAP UNGEI Network is dedicated to strengthening gender equality in and through education and pledges its commitment to advancing progress towards the SDG 4 and SDG 5, in particular.

What we do

The EAP UNGEI aims to strengthen advocacy, data collection and knowledge sharing on gender in education that will enhance countries’ efforts to ensure gender equality in their education systems. This network of partners seeks to achieve these aims through:

  • Placing gender and girls’ education on the agenda at regional meetings and events
  • Developing gender and girls’ education advocacy tools
  • Generating and sharing information and data on gender and girls’ education
  • Supporting, as appropriate, country level programming for girls’ education and gender equality in and through education

Events

Gender Equality and Education Exchange

21 and 29 January, 4 February 2021

Organized by UNGEI Secretariat in collaboration with UNICEF, UNESCO and the Global Partnership for Education, the three-part series brings together a multi-stakeholder group of government, non-governmental and multi- and bilateral partners to discuss issues of gender and education.

We come together with experts and advocates, youth activists, government, multilateral and bilateral organizations and civil society organizations about their experiences and insights, and imagine together how plans and investments to achieve gender equality in education might change and shape a more equitable future agenda.

In this session, we explore how to ensure a gender-responsive education sector for the future. GPE offers an overview on the role of gender equality in the new Strategic Plan, new guidance & requirements for gender equality (including in the Joint Sector Review and LEG guidance), assessment of gender equality in previous ESPs & key issues identified in Part 1.

In the third and final session, we identify strategies and partnerships to strengthen gender equality in education planning. Discuss gender-responsive budgeting as a strategy for advocating increased investments in gender equality in education and explore possibilities for follow-up.

This 22 January 2020 webinar by GPE focuses on how Girls’ Education Challenge projects are tracking and responding to girls’ school attendance and dropout rates and improving inclusion through cycles of data use.

Webinar: Building back better: Girls’ education in times of COVID-19 in the Asia-Pacific

This webinar examines the impact COVID-19 has had on girls’ education in the region and proposes considerations for policy makers and stakeholders to provide quality distance learning and school reopening opportunities. CSE in the Context of COVID dialogue and exhibition – November 3, 2020

This virtual meeting addressed the new realities created by the pandemic while continuing work on the long-term goal of creating strong comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) programmes across the Asia-Pacific region. The virtual exhibition showcased various innovative sexuality education initiatives around the region.
