The Rapid Assessment of Learning Spaces (RALS) exercise was designed to evaluate these needs in order to plan effectively for the reconstruction of the education system in the postwar environment. A collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) of the Government of Southern Sudan and UNICEF, it is the result of an unprecedented data collection effort. While several previous statistical projects focused on areas accessible to the SPLM/A, anticipating an eventual expansion into the former garrison towns, the RALS exercise is the first of its kind to provide an overview of educational opportunities across all of Southern Sudan.
