Increasing girls’ access to, and retention in, basic education is a major challenge in many countries. Many strategies are used to fulfill this need, including the use of incentive programmes. What incentives can be offered to improve the situation? This advocacy brief, aimed particularly to support policy makers, educators and researchers, explains what incentives are, outlines current research on the impact of incentives, and summarizes lessons learned for future policy development.
