The Global Partnership for Education has recently adopted the transition of girls to secondary education as a core indicator of its success in countries where it currently works. This reflects the recent recognition that it is the completion of secondary education that brings most of the positive externalities associated with girls’ education—from dramatically increased lifetime earnings to similarly dramatic decreases in fertility and mortality rates. For developing a coherent response to improving girls’ transition to secondary schooling, the Partnership seeks to develop a deeper understanding of the barriers to girls transitioning to secondary schooling. The current study has been undertaken from this perspective.
