UNGEI in East Asia and Pacific region to meet in August

Education for All (EFA) Mid-Decade Assessment process part of agenda

7 August 2006 - The United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) for East Asia and the Pacific will hold its next meeting on 8 August 2006 at ESCAP, UN Building in Bangkok.

Among the items to be discussed during the meeting are developments on the project to document best practices in girl’s education, and UNESCO and UNGEI’s policy and advocacy briefs.

UNESCO and UNICEF will also share updates on the EFA Mid-Decade Assessment process and results of the 27 July Thematic Working Group on EFA meeting.

The planned training of journalists on education and a joint research on boy’s performance will also be discussed during the meeting, the fourth for the group this year.

The UNGEI for East Asia and the Pacific is a partnership of the United Nations agencies, NGOs, and professional and academic bodies with the common goal of achieving the EFA targets and Millennium Development Goals of universal primary education, the elimination of gender disparity at all levels of education, and the achievement of gender equality in education.

Partner organizations in the region include the Baha’i International Community, the Education Development Centre, Inc. (EDC), International Labour Organization, Oxfam, Plan International, the Save the Children Alliance/UK, SEAMEO, UNAIDS, UNESCAP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNIFEM, WFP and World Vision.
