Opportunities lost and gained – a seminar on girls and education

Oslo, 10 August 2007 – The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and Norad will hold a seminar entitled “Opportunities lost and gained – a seminar on girls and education” in Olso on 30 August. A new study by UNICEF Madagascar on factors affecting girls’ participation in and completion of education cycles will serve as the background for the seminar. Participants will include representatives from Madagascar’s Ministry of Education and Scientific Research (MENRS), Norwegian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education, Norad and UNICEF.

The objective of the seminar is to revitalise the debate on the opportunities gained through investing in girls’ education to achieve major international goals for gender equality. There is a need to strengthen the focus on girls in Norway’s bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the education sector to ensure that their rights are fulfilled.

For a number of years, Norway has been supporting education programmes in many countries, and it continues to do so. Under the political leadership of the current Norwegian Government, special emphasis has been given to gender and equality. Norad, together with the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED), co-chairs UNGEI.

Time: 09.00 – 13.30, 30 August 2007
Venue: Norad, Auditorium 4th floor Ruseløkkveien 26, Oslo.
