CSW Side Event: Improving education outcomes for girls and women on the move

NEW YORK, 18 February 2019 -  As part of the 63rd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, it was today announced that UNGEI and African Union International Centre for Girls and Women in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) will co-host a panel discussion side event in partnership with UNICEF, Education Cannot Wait, and the governments of Canada and Norway.

Background

For the millions of girls and women on the move, as refugees, internally displaced persons and returnees, leaving home has a devastating impact on education. Research suggests refugee children are five times more likely to be out of school, and, for girls, the situation can be even worse. Social norms often result in boys being prioritised over girls to attend school. School-going costs, inadequate and unsafe facilities, gender-based violence, and many other forms of gender discrimination can all prevent refugee girls from getting the education they need.

Well trained teachers are vital for ensuring the inclusion of immigrant and refugee students, but they too need support to manage mixed-gender, multilingual, multicultural classes, often including learners with psychosocial needs. A curriculum that promotes gender and cultural diversity, provides critical skills and challenges prejudices is essential and can have a positive ripple effect beyond the classroom walls.

Programme

The African Union has declared 2019 the Year of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons in Africa and in the June 2018 Charlevoix Declaration on Quality education for girls, adolescent girls and women in developing countries G7 leaders committed to close the gap in access to education during conflict and crisis. This event will provide a space for partners to discuss challenges and opportunities for refugee women and girls to access quality education as well as strategies for meeting AU and G7 commitments.

A new analysis of the gendered experience of displacement from UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report will help guide the discussion, identifying barriers and policy solutions to inform gender-responsive planning across the education sector.
