UNGEI’s annual GAC meeting presented a valuable opportunity to convene partners and connect, take stock of activities, exchange ideas, and recommit to the way forward in advancing the girls’ education and gender equality agenda. The meeting held in Bamako, Mali was attended by more than 30 participants from over 21 organizations including multilateral and bilateral development partners, and international and regional civil society organizations. Participants were also pleased to welcome youth coalition representatives, technical experts and partners from West and Central Africa.

The first day of the meeting, Day for the Advancement of Girls’ Education, focused on examining the local context in Mali. It was opened by the First Lady of Mali, Mme. Keita, and hosted by the Government of Mali, UNICEF Mali and Plan International Mali. Over 70 participants recognized and discussed the progress and continuing challenges for girls’ education in Mali and across the region.

Over the course of the week, GAC members reviewed UNGEI’s impact at the global and regional level in 2015 and agreed upon priorities and concrete strategies for 2016. Specific sessions garnered rich discussion and focused on a wide range of topics including gender-based violence, innovation and girls’ education, the Sustainable Development Goals and other normative frameworks in girls’ education, how to influence sector planning at national level, and how to foster meaningful youth engagement.

The meeting concluded with an intensive planning session that saw members make concrete commitments to expand partners’ collective work on implementing the SDGs, making strides in systematically measuring gender equality in education, supporting gender-responsive sector analysis and planning, and moving forward with the UNGEI youth engagement strategy. This valuable exercise was an important first step to strengthen UNGEI’s partnership and coordination at the national and regional level in 2016 and beyond.
