FAWE welcomes Oley Dibba-Wadda as new Executive Director

FAWE has welcomed Ms Oley Dibba-Wadda as its new Executive Director, effective 1 January 2011.

Ms Dibba-Wadda will head FAWE’s Regional Secretariat (RS) based in Nairobi, Kenya. The role of the RS is to:

    * Provide coordination and technical support to FAWE’s 34 National Chapters across Africa

    * Monitor and evaluate the work of the organisation

    * Prepare, implement and monitor the work programme and budget in line with FAWE’s Strategic Plan

Ms Dibba-Wadda joins FAWE from Oxfam GB where she was Global Gender Advisor with a focus on international policy and programming on gender equality. She has worked as Project Manager for the Commonwealth Education Fund and has held a number of regional coordination and country management roles in gender- and education-related organisations and projects operating in Africa and Asia.

Ms Dibba-Wadda is also the current Chair of the Board of Trustees of Concern Universal and is pursuing a Doctorate in gender analysis and development at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom.

Ms Dibba-Wadda said, “I am excited about the new opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. We face a ‘perfect storm’ – this is against the backdrop of donor responses on gender and education globally and the demand for strengthening quality education for girls in Africa.”

She added, “Reflecting on donor responses as a result of the financial and economic crises in the past few years, it is clear that our efforts to influence policy on gender and education in Africa need to keep increasing and improving to translate into realities what matters most to FAWE. This is always about people – the people we work for; the people we work with; the people that support us financially and the FAWE people that make it happen.”

“We will continue to develop and build strong bridges, networks and alliances with key stakeholders to make the best use of our ability to collaborate and go forward together more swiftly and effectively,” she said.

Ms Dibba-Wadda takes over from Dr Codou Diaw who was Executive Director of FAWE from August 2007.
