DFID announces major boost for gender equality in Uganda
DFID's contribution will support Government and UN efforts to improve services and opportunities for victims of sexual and gender based violence, gather improved statistics on gender and identify clear baselines against which to measure progress. In addition, it will help local governments, non-government and citizens' groups to carry out local level initiatives to combat violence and discrimination against women.
At a press conference in Kampala, UK International Development Secretary Ivan Lewis announced:
"The UK is committed to improving opportunities for women in Uganda. Faster progress on gender equality is vital for Uganda to achieve middle-income country status and realise the Millennium Development Goals. Under this gender equality programme, the UN agencies will work together to reduce violence against women, ensure better educational opportunities for girls, and promote greater economic opportunities for women. Our contribution should achieve real results in improving the lives of women and girls."
UN Resident Coordinator, Theophane Nikyema, said
"The joint programme will improve the effectiveness of government by strengthening national systems and improving the efficiency of the UN and harmonisation of development partner support. It will deliver faster progress on sexual and reproductive rights, gender violence, and girls' education."
