World Teachers’ Day 2008
World Teachers’ Day, held annually on 5 October since 1994, commemorates the anniversary of the signing in 1966 of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. It is an occasion to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels.
Teacher shortages, insufficient training, society’s lack of respect for the profession and the policies needed to tackle these challenges were the emphasis of this year's World Teachers’ Day.

Between 1999 and 2005 the total number of primary school teachers in the world increased by 5 per cent or about 1.3 million teachers.
Worldwide, primary education systems employed about 27 million teachers in 2005.
An estimated 18 million additional teachers are needed worldwide to achieve universal primary education by 2015.
