High-Level Event on the Millennium Development Goals
The UN Secretary-General and the President of the UN General Assembly will convene a High-Level Event on the Millennium Development Goals at UN Headquarters in New York on 25 September 2008.
At the halfway point towards the target date, significant progress has been made, but urgent and increased efforts are needed by all stakeholders in order to meet the Goals by 2015.
Danida, a member of the UNGEI Global Advisory Committee from the Ministry of Denmark, has highlighted MDG 3 (Promote gender equality and empower women) as a priority area and has launched the MDG 3 Torch campaign. A side event titled Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women: A prerequisite for achieving all MDGs by 2015, will take place during the General Assembly, hosted by the Governments of Denmark and Liberia.

Of the 113 countries that failed to achieve gender parity in primary and secondary school enrolment by the target date of 2005, only 18 are likely to achieve the goal by 2015.
Rwanda currently has the highest proportion of women parliamentarians in the world, with women constituting nearly 50 per cent of elected officials in the Chamber of Deputies and about 35 per cent in the Senate..
Overall, women occupy almost 40 per cent of all paid jobs outside agriculture, compared to 35 per cent in 1990.
