CSW Side Event: A Girl’s Right to Learn Without Fear: Working to End Gender-Based Violence at School

Gender-based violence is a major and critical barrier threatening the education of girls in many countries of the world. According to the latest report by Plan International, between 500 million and 1.5 billion children experience violence every year, many in and around schools. There are immediate and long-term consequences of school-related gender-based violence including health consequences such as STDs, HIV infection, unwanted early pregnancies, psychological suffering, poor performance at school, absenteeism and high dropout rates.
UNGEI joins UNICEF (Education), Plan International and 10x10 in this event to launch a call for global action and urge governments to adopt a multi-sectoral action plan to prevent and respond to violence against girls and boys, with a strong focus on gender and the school context. The side-event will include a moderated panel discussion to discuss findings of Plan’s global report, A Girl’s Right to Learn Without Fear: Working to End Gender-Based Violence at School and explore how partners, including governments, can work to address school-related gender based violence (SRGBV). A special advance preview of 10x10’s new documentary, Girl Rising, will be also be screened.
The event will take place at the UNICEF House in New York on 5 March 2013 at 6:00pm-8:00pm. We invite you to watch it unfold live at: www.livestream.com/unicef
