Nepal: Background

This map does not reflect a position by UNICEF on the legal status of any country or territory or the delimitation of any frontiers.
Human Rights Watch reports that the number of “disappearances,” usually by government forces, are the highest in the world. The Peace Corps recently halted operations in Nepal. UNICEF is one of the few organizations allowed by the insurgent forces to continue its humanitarian work, though “suspensions” are common.
Despite the political conflict, Nepal has experienced modest economic growth. Government spending on education, health and social services remains stable.
