UNITED NATIONS GIRLS EDUCATION INITIATIVE

NEW YORK, USA, 11 July 2006 - The UNGEI Global Advisory Committee meeting takes place next week at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, 17-18 July.  The annual meeting, held alongside the Education for All (EFA) Working Group, convenes its Global Advisory Committee, which include representatives from the United Nations system, governments, donor countries, non-governmental organizations and civil society. This committee of key partners share in the planning, decision-making, guidance and accountability of UNGEI.

Discussion around operationalising partnerships at country and regional levels will be a key theme. Experiences on both the opportunities and obstacles faced will be shared. Also scheduled for discussion are commitments to closer integration with the wider EFA Framework, in particular the Fast Track Initiative at country level.

The upcoming EFA High-Level Group Meeting taking place in Cairo later this year focuses on the theme of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE). Since UNGEI is the EFA flagship for girls’ education, the Global Advisory Committee will take a closer look at advocacy and messaging around this theme with regards to girls’ education.
