Central Asian Republics and Kazakhstan to discuss EFA developments
30 May 2006 - High-level officials from the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and host government Turkmenistan will meet next month to discuss progress made in achieving the Education for All (EFA) goals at the Annual CARK Education Forum. The Forum will be held from 12 to 15 June 2006 at the President Hotel in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
Education technical experts and programme planners of the five Central Asian countries will also be attending the Forum. Representatives of UN agencies and bilateral donor agencies will also participate.
This year's theme is "Moving Forward to Achieve the EFA Goals." The Forum will focus on country planning for the EFA mid-decade assessment, country progress reports on achieving the EFA goals, and the development of partnerships with international and non-governmental organizations for EFA. There will also be special sessions to discuss the first EFA goal of early childhood care and education or ECCE.
Representatives from UNESCO Bangkok will attend the meeting and give presentations on the coordinated approach to undertake national and regional assessment of EFA, the EFA Global Monitoring Report, gender issues in education, language in education policy issues, inclusive education, and other issues related to quality education.
The UNICEF Office in Turkmenistan is co-organizing the Forum with the host Government. In addition, a representative from the UNICEF Headquarters in New York will talk about the Millennium Development Goals with focus on education, while the UNICEF Regional Education Advisor will discuss child-friendly school environments.
The CARK Forum Executive Committee will meet on 12 June, prior to the formal opening of the meeting on 13 June. A resolution is expected to be adopted at the closing of the Forum, which will focus on ensuring access, equity and quality Education for All in the five CARK countries.
The CARK Education Forum has been held annually since 2002, rotating the venue among the five CARK countries.
