Child Marriage Outlawed in Malawi

GENET girl leader Memory Banda (pictured above) and co-founder Joyce Mkandawire will join LGL at the UN Commission on the Status of Women next month.

This story is originally from the Let Girls Lead newsletter.

Dear friends and supporters,
Let Girls Lead has amazing news to share - the Malawian Parliament has just passed landmark legislation banning child marriage. After five years of advocacy by Let Girls Lead (LGL) partners and other key organizations, the government of Malawi has voted to pass a National Marriage Law increasing the legal age of marriage from 15 to 18 years.
This unprecedented victory guarantees a Malawian girl's right to be a girl, for the first time in history.
This major win for girls would not have happened without the undaunted advocacy of the Adolescent Girls Advocacy Network (AGANET), a national network of NGOs founded by our alumni in 2011, and the strong leadership of LGL grantee partner, the Girls Empowerment Network (GENET).
We are proud that the roots of AGANET lay with Let Girls Lead, and are honored to have contributed to this groundbreaking achievement for girls through the leadership development, organizational strengthening, and funding we provide to AGANET, GENET, and LGL's network of Malawian advocates.
While the hard work of implementation is just beginning, we are thrilled that a girl's right to say no to early marriage is now legally recognized in Malawi. In a country where more than half of girls are married before age 18, the future for Malawian girls has just gotten a whole lot brighter.
You can read more about this exciting news in our press release, our coverage in The Guardian, and today's articles in Reuters and the Huffington Post.
