UNGEI marks International Day of the Girl Child | Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence

The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child is Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence. Physical, sexual, and emotional violence affect adolescent girls in striking proportions. A gross violation of adolescent girls’ rights, violence threatens their physical, emotional and psychological health, diminishes their potential and hinders the development of their communities.

Furthermore, violence against adolescent girls in and around school continues to be a serious barrier to fulfilling their right to education, and is one of the key factors for low quality of school education for girls. Yet, education can also be a powerful tool to help end the cycle of violence.

In line with one of UNGEI’s key strategic policy advocacy priorities to reduce/eliminate school-related gender-based violence, UNGEI marks this day by highlighting relevant resources, in hopes of equipping the international community with the relevant knowledge and lessons learned to tackle this issue. Below are resources from our partners which we will continue to add to in the lead up to International Day of the Girl Child, 11 October 2014.
