5 October 2006 - World Teachers’ Day is a global tribute to teachers and their contribution to learning and social development.

2006 also marks the fortieth anniversary of the Joint ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers which drew international attention to teachers’ position in society.

World Teachers’ Day was inaugurated in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers on 5 October 1966. This year's World Teachers' Day observance is particularly important in that it commemorates the 40th anniversary of the signing of the UNESCO/ILO Recommendation. More than 100 countries currently celebrate World Teachers’ Day on 5 October.
