2010 International Year of Youth

The International Year of Youth was launched in the region on 18 August 2010 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand.  This year’s theme celebrates and acknowledges the value of “dialogue and mutual understanding” among youth from different cultures as well as different generations.  Through a highly vibrant roundtable discussion on youth and MDG-related issues - which included representatives from Government, youth leaders and United Nations officials – participants were able to emphasize the need to reach beyond comfort zones, treat every person as unique, and include youth in the discourse for change.

East Asia and Pacific Regional UNGEI members attended the event and issued a joint statement which echoed the sentiments of many - that young people are vibrant sources of energy and ideas and can serve as dynamic agents of change. With over 700 million young people, the Asia Pacific region represents a face of hope and optimism for a brighter future. Less than five years are left to achieve the Millennium Development Goals – but by harnessing this energy and developing the skills of youth, the MDGs can become reality.
