UNGEI strongly condems shooting of 14-year-old girl in Pakistan

NEW YORK, 11 OCTOBER 2012 – The United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI) today condemned the senseless attack on Malala Yousafzai and two other school girls in Pakistan.

Malala, 14, has been a strong advocate for girls’ education in a country where many children – especially  girls – are not in school. Two of her companions were also injured in the attack.

“Attacks on school children are completely unacceptable,” said Nora Fyles, head of the UNGEI Secretariat. “Malala has lent her powerful voice to speak out on the importance of educating girls. Her courage should be admired and emulated not silenced.”

UNGEI stressed the right for children – both girls and boys – to be able to learn and thrive in a safe and protective environment, even in the most difficult circumstances.
